
A | Colombo, Oct 12 (UNI) Sri Lanka is among the 10 countries with the worst malnutrition rates among 200 countries worldwide, former President Chandrika Kumaratunga has said in remarks published on Wednesday.
Addressing the growing problem of malnutrition especially among children, she said that over 20 per cent of those under five years were severely malnourished, The Island newspaper reported.
The former President was speaking at the first meeting of the National Combined Mechanism for Food Security and Nutrition of the Presidential Secretariat.
At the conclusion of the discussions, it was decided to provide immediate food relief to children ensuring proper delivery of food and cash handouts, accelerate action plans to increase the production of milk, eggs and vegetable, and set up monitoring mechanisms of the projects implemented by civil society for food relief.
It was also decided to involve more extensively civil society organizations currently engaged in providing food relief to school children.
